Bastion Hotel Rotterdam Zuid Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Bastion Hotel Rotterdam Zuid, tucked away on Driemanssteeweg in the Charlois district, I wasn’t expecting much from this three-star spot. But you know what? Sometimes the unassuming places surprise you the most.

The thing about this hotel is that it sits in this perfectly practical spot south of Rotterdam’s center – not flashy, but incredibly functional if you know the area. You’re actually right where the Groene Kruisweg meets Driemanssteeweg, which means you can hop onto the A15 in minutes if you’re driving, or catch public transport into the city without dealing with all the downtown chaos. I mean, Rotterdam’s great, but parking in the center is honestly a nightmare and expensive as hell. Here, you’ve got proper parking that doesn’t cost a fortune, which already puts it ahead of half the hotels I’ve stayed at in Dutch cities.

The rooms themselves? Look, this isn’t luxury – it’s straightforward, clean, functional accommodation that does exactly what it promises. The beds are comfortable enough (I’m picky about mattresses), the bathrooms are spotless, and there’s this no-nonsense efficiency that I actually found refreshing after staying at places that try too hard. The breakfast is solid Dutch fare – nothing fancy, but you’ll leave satisfied and ready for the day. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays at night, despite being on a fairly busy street. The windows do their job, and you’re not dealing with the tram noise you’d get closer to the center.

Actually, the Charlois area has grown on me over the years – it’s where real Rotterdam people live and work, not just the tourist bits. You’ve got proper local cafes within walking distance, and honestly, some of the best Indonesian food in the city is hidden around these neighborhoods if you know where to look. The hotel staff seem to get this too – they’re locals who can point you toward the good stuff, not just the obvious tourist traps. When I asked about getting to the Erasmus Bridge area, the guy at reception gave me three different route options depending on whether I wanted scenic, fast, or cheap.

Is it going to wow you with fancy amenities? No. Will it give you a comfortable base to explore Rotterdam without breaking the bank or dealing with city center hassles? Absolutely. I’ve stayed here twice now when visiting friends in the area, and both times I’ve slept well, eaten decently, and gotten where I needed to go without stress. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need – especially in a city like Rotterdam where the real attractions are out there waiting for you, not in your hotel lobby.

Apartments in Rotterdam provide travelers with authentic local experiences, allowing them to explore traditional Dutch cafes and experience daily life in historic neighborhoods like Kralingen and Blijdorp.

Reviews of Bastion Hotel Rotterdam Zuid

  • Very Good – Christopher from United Kingdom – February 20, 2025 (8/10)

Friendly staff and great food in the restaurant

What could be improved: Hotel is located on a busy road. Rooms do not have soundproofing

  • Good but serves a purpose.wouldn’t use it for a weeks stay. For one night it was fine – Marlene from United Kingdom – February 19, 2025 (8/10)

Clean, staff were welcoming and professional. Beds were comfortable.

What could be improved: The bathroom door handles fell off, weren’t fixed on and just pushed on and off. Limited dinner selection as it was a Sunday night, and the quality wasn’t as good as we expected.

  • Very Good – Ana from Portugal – September 1, 2024 (8/10)

Is a really practical hotel for business

  • Very Good – Eduards from Latvia – July 15, 2024 (8/10)

  • A comfortable spot to rest between busy days in Rotterdam. – Susan from United Kingdom – July 7, 2024 (7/10)

Good breakfast, clean room, comfy bed,, great coffee in the room!

What could be improved: TV didn't work amazingly and I was caught out on the lack of USB plug sockets.

  • A nice practical hotel with very helpful and friendly staff – Sally from United Kingdom – February 28, 2024 (8/10)

The staff were all wonderful and very helpful, the room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The coffee machine in the room was very welcome! Probably an ideal hotel if you are coming by car as it's very close to the main road and has lots of parking. The restaurant didn't have many dishes but what I had was very tasty and clearly freshly made.

What could be improved: The room was in need of a little modernisation, many of the TV stations didn't work because it was a SD TV so that needs retuning and it was difficult to get enough light into most of the room. Quite a walk to the nearest bus stop (much without pavement) which is a shame as there isn't much nearby.

  • Close to Rotterdam Ahoy by taxi, but not well connected if moving by bus. – Fernanda from Malta – October 4, 2023 (8/10)

Cozy room and quiet, very friendly staff.

What could be improved: The lifts are not very clean.

  • Good – Raidily from Netherlands – July 19, 2023 (7/10)

What could be improved: The bed

  • Very Good – Reina from United Kingdom – May 16, 2023 (8/10)

convenient location, good food fir breakfast and dinner

What could be improved: breakfast a bit expensive

the lighting in the room is very ineffective, was unable to read at night, which was a problem

  • Good location for events in Ahoy, on-site parking a plus. Clean rooms, great bed! – Meredith from Netherlands – July 18, 2025 (7/10)

Room was very clean, great bed and pillow. Staff was friendly. Nice to have on-site parking. Breakfast was fine. Good location fro a taxi to/from Ahoy.

What could be improved: The rooms were recently renovated, but the rest of the hotel needs some updating. A bit pricey for the overall quality, but we were there during North Sea Jazz.
