Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard about The James Rotterdam, I wasn’t expecting much from a three-star place in what’s become such a trendy city. But you know what? Sometimes you get pleasantly surprised. The moment you walk into the lobby, there’s this understated cool vibe that feels authentically Rotterdam – not trying too hard to be Amsterdam’s edgier cousin, if you know what I mean. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which is rare these days, and they seem genuinely excited to tell you about their city rather than just rattling off tourist traps.

What really got me was how they’ve nailed that sweet spot between industrial chic and actual comfort. The rooms have these great big windows that let in tons of light, and honestly, the beds are better than some four-star places I’ve stayed at recently. I mean, the bathrooms aren’t huge, but everything works properly and the water pressure is fantastic – trust me, after a day of walking around Rotterdam‘s sprawling architecture scene, that matters. There’s something refreshing about a hotel that focuses on getting the basics absolutely right instead of loading you up with amenities you’ll never use.

The neighborhood is what sealed it for me though. You’re actually in a real part of the city where locals live and work, not stuck in some sterile hotel district. There’s this amazing little coffee roastery about two blocks away that the front desk guy told me about – definitely not in any guidebook yet. The trams are super close, but the street stays surprisingly quiet at night, which I definitely wasn’t expecting in such a central spot.

Here’s the thing that impressed me most: they seem to genuinely care about the experience without being precious about it. When my original room had a view of basically nothing, they moved me to a higher floor without making it feel like I was asking for the world. The breakfast isn’t fancy, but it’s fresh and local, and you can actually sit and read the paper without feeling rushed. For what you’re paying – and Rotterdam isn’t cheap these days – The James delivers exactly what it promises and then some. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to come back to Rotterdam sooner rather than later.

  Beds are very comfortable and rooms are quite spacious for two people. There is a nice 24h supermarket inside the hotel which has lots of the stuff you would need.
