Sparks Hostel Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Sparks Hostel? I walked in expecting your typical backpacker crash pad, but this place on Westersingel is honestly more like a boutique hotel that just happens to call itself a hostel. The moment you step inside, you realize they’ve done something pretty special with this old building in Rotterdam‘s city center.
The location is actually perfect if you want to feel like you’re living in Rotterdam rather than just visiting it. Westersingel puts you right in the thick of things – I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Cube Houses and maybe ten minutes from the market hall. But here’s the thing locals know: this street doesn’t get the crazy tourist foot traffic, so you can actually sleep at night. The neighborhood has that authentic Rotterdam vibe with proper cafés and shops that aren’t trying to separate you from your euros every five seconds. I grabbed coffee most mornings at this little place around the corner where the barista remembered my order by day three.
What really sets Sparks apart is how they’ve nailed that sweet spot between hostel prices and hotel comfort. The rooms – even the dorm ones – feel thoughtfully designed rather than just functional. They’ve got these custom-built bunks that don’t creak every time someone rolls over (honestly, if you’ve stayed in hostels, you know this is huge), and each bed has proper privacy curtains and charging ports. The private rooms are genuinely lovely, with these big windows that let in tons of light and views over the canal. The common areas buzz with energy without being chaotic – there’s this great kitchen where I ended up cooking with people from about six different countries, and a lounge area with books in multiple languages scattered around. The WiFi actually works everywhere, the showers have proper water pressure, and – this might sound small but it matters – the place always smells clean and fresh, never like that weird hostel smell of too many people and not enough ventilation. Staff genuinely seems to care about the place and knows Rotterdam inside out. They pointed me toward this incredible Ethiopian restaurant that I never would’ve found otherwise, and gave me the real scoop on which bars locals actually go to versus the tourist traps. It’s that kind of insider knowledge that makes you feel like you’re getting the authentic Rotterdam experience.

I had an absolutely fantastic stay at Sparks Hostel, it’s honestly one of the best hostels I’ve ever been to! The shower and toilet were spotless, and I loved that there were two right in the room, which made everything super convenient. Having fresh towels included was such a thoughtful touch and made me feel immediately comfortable.
The little details here truly make a big difference. In the morning, free coffee between 9–11 am was the perfect start to the day, and having tea available anytime was a wonderful bonus. The beds were designed so well, private, cozy, and incredibly comfortable. I slept better than I have in most hotels, not just hostels! The whole place felt modern, well structured, and very well maintained.
The atmosphere was welcoming and warm, and the staff were so kind, helpful, and attentive, it really felt like they cared about every guest’s experience. The Wi-Fi was strong and reliable, which made it easy to stay connected.
Everything exceeded my expectations. I can’t thank the team enough for creating such a clean, comfortable, and friendly environment. Sparks Hostel is truly a gem, I will definitely be coming back and recommending it to everyone I know!

Everything about this hostel was amazing? The location is fantastic- near a tram line, the main train station and the centre of Rotterdam. The beds were super comfortable, there was a complimentary towel, bathrooms were spotless, morning coffee was free and staff were fab too. I wish I could have stayed longer
What could be improved: Nothing!Good choice for a few days stay – Fegyverneki from Hungary – August 13, 2025 (9/10)
Cash acceptance is a huge bonus for a foreigner, they cleaned the rooms every day, free coffee, free breakfast, fridge for personal items and a friendly staff.
Location is in the heart of Rotterdam, everything is under a 20-30 minute walk.
What could be improved: Very steep stairs going to the hotel rooms, no controllable AC (for environment purposes probably)Pleasant stay at Rotterdam and recommend if need to find a place nearby central station – Yeuk from Hong Kong – August 10, 2025 (10/10)
Helpful and friendly staff, clean room
What could be improved: Staircase is a little bit steep, but still ok as there is small lift for luggageOne of the nicest hostels I’ve stayed in – Samantha from France – August 4, 2025 (10/10)
10/10 comfortable, privacy, comfy beds, free coffee in the morning, coworking areas
Clean, comfortable stay in the heart of Rotterdam – Danly from Australia – July 24, 2025 (10/10)
A clean, comfortable hostel in a super convenient location (5 mins walk from Rotterdam Central station). I stayed on the first floor and the room was very quiet at night. There were 2 showers and 2 toilets between 8 people so I never had to wait. Overall super impressed!
What could be improved: The top bunks had built in privacy screens but not the bottom bunks. Not a big deal as it already provides more privacy than many other hostels, but it would have made it even better!
