Hotel Van Walsum
About
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Van Walsum on Mathenesserlaan, you immediately get the sense that this is one of those places locals actually know about. It's a solid three-star property that doesn't try to be something it's not — and honestly, that's exactly what makes it work so well. The building has character without being flashy, and you can tell right away that they've put thought into the details that actually matter to travelers.
Location & Getting Around
The location is genuinely excellent — I mean, couples rate it 9.2 out of 10, and after spending time in Rotterdam, I completely understand why. You're right in the Centrum district, which means you can walk to most of the major sights without dealing with complicated transit connections. What's really nice is that you're close enough to everything important but not stuck in the middle of tourist chaos. The parking situation is actually handled well here too — they have private parking on-site, which anyone who's tried to park in Rotterdam city center will tell you is worth its weight in gold.
The Room Experience
The rooms are comfortable in that straightforward, no-nonsense way that makes you feel like you can actually relax. Nothing overly fancy, but everything you need is there and it all works properly. The room I stayed in had good natural light and decent space — not huge, but well-designed so it doesn't feel cramped. You know what I appreciated most? The attention to practical details like proper reading lights and enough outlets where you actually need them.
Food & Breakfast
Here's where Hotel Van Walsum really surprised me — the food is legitimately good. I went in with pretty standard expectations for hotel dining, but the meals here are actually something people recommend, and I can see why. The breakfast setup is both continental and buffet style, which gives you flexibility depending on whether you're rushing out for an early meeting or taking your time on a weekend morning. The restaurant has this relaxed atmosphere where you don't feel like you're eating in a hotel lobby, if that makes sense.
Why Guests Love It
What really sets this place apart is how it manages to hit that sweet spot between being professionally run and genuinely welcoming. The 8.6 rating reflects what you experience — it's the kind of hotel where small things are done right, from helpful staff who know the neighborhood to reliable wifi that actually works throughout the building. Couples especially seem to love it here, probably because it strikes that perfect balance of being centrally located without feeling impersonal. It delivers exactly what it promises, and sometimes that's exactly what you want from a city break in Rotterdam.

Coziness exemplified
I got the top floor room and it was super cozy
Bathroom is a little old and has a trace of smell, but nothing critical
Great central location. Nice room with coffee machine
Location is great. Room - spacious. I got Karlsson’s room on the roof - very happy with it. Well worth the money. Clean and safe. Rooms have a coffee machine and a kettle with selection of teas and Illy coffee - perfect start of the day. All the staff is very friendly and very helpful.
Due to scaffold currently outside and the strong winds during my stay - it was very noisy at night - creaking all night but not hotel’s fault.
Wonderful
A good, clean hotel in a great location with friendly and nice staff, especially the Romanian girl! I didn’t eat there, so I can’t comment on that, but overall, it was a good experience. The location was perfect, with a smallish, cozy room and a nice balcony facing a beautiful garden. There are some restaurants and supermarkets nearby.
I had such a fantastic stay. Everything was extremely neat and organized. Amazing. breakfast as well
I got a very spacious and equipped apartment. Everything was very neat and organized. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The breakfast buffet was amazing, they had so many different options for (eggs, juices, coffees, charcuterie, cheeses, jams, bakery, etc). I really enjoyed having variety every day, plus the hall is cozy and perfect to start the day. I even stayed there to finish some work. They also have sitting outdoors. It was such an amazing stay.
I had a fantastic stay in every aspect.
Comfortable
Excellent location with friendly atmosphere
Fantastic
Perfect location to the city centre and the Train Station. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Jos who received us at reception was extremely friendly and welcoming. He provided us with a map and all the places to see in the city, including the way to catch the water bus to Kinderdijk to see the windmills. Highly recommend this hotel to visitors to Rotterdam.
Nothing
Exceptional
This hotel was in a great location. We had a room with a door out on to a pretty garden which was lovely. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
We liked everything.
Very pleasant stay in a friendly establishment.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Lovely large room with comfortable bed and egg chairs. Fridge and safe. A good selection of quality teas and a coffee machine provided. Iron available.
Breakfast was good but the breakfast room was a little small. A lovely garden was available also.
The best work-related stay in my career.
Very clean, spacious room, silent location, very friendly staff.
Nothing not to like.
Exceptional
People are so kind and caring. Breakfast is incredible, rooms are far better than a 3 Stars Hotel and you are close to many touristic places. I would love to go back
