Hotel Santa Maria
About
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel Santa Maria on Scheepstimmermanslaan, you know exactly what you're getting — and honestly, that's not a bad thing. This one-star hotel doesn't pretend to be something it's not, but what surprised me is how much character it actually has. The building sits right in Rotterdam's city center, and I mean really in the thick of things — you can practically feel the city's energy buzzing around you the moment you step outside.
Location That Actually Matters
Here's the thing about staying in Rotterdam's Centrum — you're walking distance from pretty much everything that matters. The Markthal is maybe ten minutes away on foot, and you can easily stroll to the iconic cube houses or catch a tram to the port area. What I really appreciated is that couples seem to get this location — they've rated it 8.7, and I can see why. There's something romantic about being able to wander through the city's modern architecture together, then duck into a cozy café when the Dutch weather decides to remind you who's boss.
The Room Reality
Look, we need to be real about what a one-star room offers. The space is compact — I mean, really compact — but it's clean and functional. You've got a bed, a small desk area, and basic amenities that actually work. The Wi-Fi was surprisingly decent, which matters when you're trying to figure out your next day's plans or upload those Rotterdam skyline photos. Don't expect fancy linens or a minibar, but you know what? Sometimes you just need a safe, clean place to crash after exploring the city all day.
Practical Perks
What works in Hotel Santa Maria's favor is the little stuff that budget travelers actually care about. The staff speaks English well — always a relief when you're trying to get directions or recommendations. There's no on-site restaurant, but honestly, with Rotterdam's food scene right outside your door, that's hardly a problem. I found myself grabbing breakfast at the local bakeries anyway, which felt more authentic than hotel dining. The 24-hour front desk is genuinely helpful, especially when you're coming back late from exploring the nightlife around Witte de Withstraat.
Why Guests Love It
That 7.7 rating tells the real story here — people aren't expecting miracles, but they're getting solid value. The location score of 8.9 is what really sells this place, because let's face it, in a city like Rotterdam, being centrally located can make or break your trip. You're saving money on transport, you're in the middle of the action, and you're getting a genuine feel for how the city actually works. It's perfect for travelers who plan to spend most of their time out exploring rather than lounging in their hotel room. Sometimes the best hotel is simply the one that gets out of your way and lets the destination shine.

Lovely little hotel
Staff very helpful. Excellent location. Nice rooms
Good value.
Location was excellent with numerous restaurants nearby
The location was great though sometimes noisy, since it is close to a busy street. All in all it was a great find and we
Great location, very friendly staff and very nice rooms.
The water in the bathrooms didn’t drain properly and there were no plungers for you to fix it yourself. There were also no signs for us to hang at the door, to let the staff know we didn’t need our room to be cleaned.
Pleasant and friendly.
Location, neighborhood of metro, the friendly reception, the (small but) functional room, high hygiene level.
Just an observation: During my stay the weather was about 23 degrees Celsius. My room at the top floor was warm, but still OK. During hot days some additional airco might be useful for the rooms on the top floor.
Wonderful
Perfect location, although a bit noisy! Everything you need around the corner and an easy check-in with remote/online unlocking and bluetooth access to rooms.
It was my own fault, but without a charge in your phone it's difficult to access your room. Had to recharge my phone in a nearby restaurant to get in again. Also it was difficult to reach any staff.
Good
The staff were helpful. Within easy walking distance to Markthal and Kubuswonigen, with interesting sights along the way. Grocery store nearby.

One night staying at Hotel Santa Maria
The room was clean and well equipped as described in the room description. The toilet and bathroom was also clean and worked well. We were very satisfied with the room as it had windows facing the city street.
We had nothing to dislike.
Wonderful
Everyone was very helpful . The room was very clean.
This would not be easily in the control of the hotel but it was quite noisy on the landings late into the night,
Affordable accommodation a short walk to the centre
Room was large and good for 5 of us on the edge of the city. Couple of bars on the same street and a large supermarket opposite.
20 minute walk to the central station but this is a flat easy walk.
