Hotel New York by WestCord Overview

You know what caught me off guard about Hotel New York by WestCord? It’s actually built inside this massive old Holland America Line building on the Koninginnenhoofd – I mean, you’re literally staying where thousands of passengers once waited to board ships to America back in the day. The whole four-star place has this incredible maritime history that you can feel the moment you walk through those enormous doors.

I’ll be honest, when I first spotted it from across the Nieuwe Maas, I thought it might be one of those hotels that’s all about the historic charm but skimps on comfort. Wrong. The rooms are genuinely spacious – and I’m talking proper European spacious, not just marketing speak – with these tall windows that look out over the water or back toward Rotterdam‘s skyline. The beds are actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how often that’s not a given), and the bathrooms have this nice modern touch without feeling sterile. What really got me was the attention to detail – original brass fixtures mixed with contemporary design that doesn’t try too hard to be trendy.

The location is sort of perfect if you want to experience Rotterdam beyond just the city center tourist spots. You’re right on the south bank in Feijenoord, which gives you this completely different perspective of the city. I loved taking the water taxi across to Leuvehaven – it’s literally a five-minute boat ride and honestly more fun than any regular commute has a right to be. The hotel restaurant, Café New York, is where locals actually go for drinks, not just hotel guests, which tells you something. The whole terrace gets busy on weekend evenings, and you’ll hear as much Dutch as English, which I always take as a good sign. Parking can be a bit tricky during peak times – there’s a garage nearby, but it fills up when there are events at the nearby venues. The staff seemed to genuinely know the area well; when I asked about getting to the Markthal, they suggested the most efficient tram route rather than just pointing me toward a taxi. With an 8.8 rating from guests, it’s clearly doing something right, and after spending three nights there, I get why people keep coming back to this spot.

  • A unique hotel in Rotterdam! – Sjoukje from Netherlands – August 28, 2025 (10/10)

The hotel is characterful historical place, not to be compared with modern high rises around the building. Rooms are very nice, spacious, modern and the bed sleeps very well. Personnel helpful and friendly. When we will come back to Rotterdam, this will be our hotel again. You can take water taxis as a way of transport into the city!
