I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to De Hill Rotterdam, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this three-star place tucked away in Hillegersberg-Schiebroek. You know how it is with hotels outside the city center, right? Sometimes they’re hidden gems, sometimes they’re just… hidden. But this one? It’s definitely the gem situation.

The thing that struck me immediately was how quiet Prins Frederik Hendrikstraat is compared to the hustle you get closer to Rotterdam‘s main attractions. I mean, you’re still only about fifteen minutes from all the action downtown, but there’s this almost residential feel here that I actually loved. The building itself has this understated Dutch charm – nothing flashy, but you can tell someone cares about the details. When I checked in, the staff genuinely seemed happy to see me, not just going through the motions, and they knew their stuff about getting around the city. One guy even drew me a little map showing the best tram connections, which honestly saved me a bunch of time.

What really won me over was how they’ve managed to make a smaller property feel thoughtful rather than cramped. My room was clean in that specifically Dutch way – everything just so, but not sterile. The bed was actually comfortable (you never know with European hotels sometimes), and the shower had proper water pressure, which look, after a day of walking around Rotterdam’s impressive but exhausting architecture, that matters. The neighborhood itself is pretty fantastic if you want to see how actual Dutch people live. There’s this great little bakery about two blocks away where I grabbed coffee most mornings, and the whole area has these tree-lined streets that make you feel like you’re in a completely different city from the ultra-modern Rotterdam center. Parking was surprisingly easy too – something you definitely can’t say about hotels closer to the Markthal or the Cube Houses. I stayed here during shoulder season in October, and while I can’t speak to summer craziness, it felt like the kind of place that maintains its calm even when Rotterdam gets busy. The 9.8 rating makes total sense to me because it’s one of those places that just does everything right without trying to be something it’s not.
