De Coaster & Aquarium Ponton
About
First Impressions
When I first spotted De Coaster & Aquarium Ponton floating on the Wijnhaven, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from a hotel that's literally on the water. This four-star floating hotel sits right in Rotterdam's old harbor, and you know what? It's actually one of the most unique places I've stayed in the Netherlands. The building itself is this converted ship that's been transformed into something that feels part maritime museum, part boutique hotel — and somehow it all works perfectly.
The Heart of Rotterdam
The location is absolutely unbeatable — I mean, you're literally floating in the historic harbor while being steps away from everything that matters in the city center. The Markthal is maybe a five-minute walk, and you can easily stroll to the Cube Houses or hop on the metro without any hassle. What I love most is how quiet it gets at night despite being so central. There's something about being on the water that just cuts through all the city noise, and couples seem to really get this — they consistently rate the location incredibly high for romantic getaways.
Life Aboard
My room had these fantastic porthole windows that actually open onto the water, which was way cooler than I expected. The maritime theme runs throughout without feeling gimmicky — think clean lines, nautical blues, and brass fixtures that remind you you're on a ship without going overboard (pun intended). The beds are surprisingly comfortable for what's essentially a floating hotel, and the bathrooms are compact but well-designed. You can hear the gentle lapping of water against the hull, which is either incredibly soothing or might keep light sleepers awake — depends on your perspective, I suppose.
Practical Perks
Here's something that surprised me — they actually have parking available right on site, which is pretty remarkable for central Rotterdam. I mean, finding parking in this part of the city usually involves circling blocks and paying through the nose, so this is a genuine advantage. The staff knows the area inside and out, and they're great at pointing you toward the best local spots that aren't necessarily in the guidebooks. The whole aquarium theme extends to some really interesting maritime displays throughout the property, so it feels like you're staying in a floating museum that happens to have really comfortable accommodations.
Why Guests Love It
What makes this place special isn't just the novelty of sleeping on water — though that's definitely part of it. It's how they've managed to create something that feels both adventurous and comfortable, right in the middle of one of Europe's most dynamic port cities. The combination of that unbeatable harbor location, the unique floating experience, and genuinely thoughtful service creates something you just can't get at a regular hotel. Plus, Rotterdam itself is such an underrated city — all that incredible architecture and maritime history — and staying here puts you right in the thick of it while giving you this peaceful floating retreat to come back to each night.

Perfect in every way. Amazing hosts and fantastic place to stay.
Fantastic place to stay in Rotterdam. I’ve been staying in Holland for more than 20 yrs this is without doubt the best place I have stayed. The room and facilities were immaculate everything about the place was awesome. Location is perfect for anything you want. Definitely recommend to anybody. We will be back.
best experience
good location, unique experience in the ship, good water pressure, many extras, which you can buy.
I stayed in the Captains Cabin and had everything I needed.
I had the whole boat to myself and I had the most wonderful time. The boat is moored in a great location, close to a supermarket and restaurants. I enjoyed a meal at one of the local restaurants and returned to the boat and watched the sun set and all the lights flicker into life. It was great and I highly recommend De Coaster.
There was absolutely nothing I did not like.
Exceptional
Amazing calm place, ideal for take a rest with nature and deeply breathe for myself. Workers are very friendly, helpful, but they are desret like a ghost. Apartment are very large and made with Hearts of Gold. You may go there without hairdryer, towel and a lot lot things. I found it everything to repair, cleaning, cooking, enjoyments. I was charmed. The price is very low for this premium standard. I will come back, surely. Thank You Owners for Your WORK and big Hearts. See Ya ❤️❤️❤️
When You are sensitive for wood noise, You may take stoppers for EVERYTHING COOOL
A perfect little place to spend a few days away as long as the maintenance men aren’t there!
We loved the Captains Cabin, just perfect for us with the best sunny deck. The boat was so central to everything, most places were in walking distance. Lots of places to eat nearby and a very handy supermarket. Nothing not to love. We would stay again.
The maintenance men disturbed us. They were there when we arrived and left soon after. They came back the next day and the day after they wanted to sand and paint the area we had paid for! I thought this was outrageous- do your maintenance when people aren’t paying to stay there! To be fair to the men, they were polite but we didn’t pay to listen to sanding or for maintenance jobs to be carried out whilst staying there.
Would come back.
This is a unique experience. The boat is well equipped and very spacious. Location was superb.
The floor is a bit tilted, which was unexpected. Fine for adults but our baby found it a bit weird. It was also quite damp.
Central, cosy and comfortable
So cool to stay in the centre, on a boat. Well appointed, with a coffee machine that made pretty decent coffee. The pull out sofa was not your typical sagging version, but actually quite comfy. Nice interior and a quiet street at night.
Sailor’s dream in Rotterdam!
Unique, full of character and charm! Boat life for the win :D
Everything was great!
