First Impressions

Walking into citizenM Rotterdam, you immediately know this isn’t your typical hotel. The lobby feels more like a trendy co-working space meets art gallery — there’s this massive communal table where people are actually working on laptops, and the design is so distinctly modern it almost feels futuristic. I mean, the check-in process happens entirely through sleek self-service kiosks, which honestly took me a minute to figure out, but the staff hovering nearby were quick to help without being pushy about it.

Location & Neighborhood

You really can’t beat the spot they’ve chosen in Rotterdam — right on Gelderse Plein in the city center, you’re literally steps from everything that matters. The Markthal is a five-minute walk (and trust me, you’ll want to check out those food stalls), while the iconic cube houses are practically around the corner. What I love is that you can easily walk to the waterfront area, and the metro connections are right there if you want to explore beyond the center. The couples who stay here clearly get it — there’s something romantic about having this four-star base right in the heart of everything.

The Room Experience

The room design is where citizenM really shows off — everything is controlled through a tablet mounted by the bed, from the lighting to the temperature to the TV. It sounds gimmicky, but it actually works brilliantly once you get the hang of it. The beds are genuinely some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered in this price range (and apparently I’m not alone in thinking this), with these massive pillows that somehow strike the perfect balance between soft and supportive. The bathrooms are compact but cleverly designed, with a rainfall shower that makes you forget you’re in what’s essentially a efficiently-designed space.

Breakfast & Dining

Breakfast here is served in their canteenM restaurant, and what impressed me most was how they’ve managed to cater to pretty much every dietary need without making it feel like an afterthought. The buffet setup includes solid vegetarian and vegan options — not just sad fruit and toast, but actually creative dishes that make you want to linger over your morning coffee. The space itself buzzes with energy in the mornings, filled with both business travelers and tourists planning their day in Rotterdam.

Why Guests Love It

There’s clearly something special happening here when you see the number of repeat guests — people genuinely come back to this place, which says a lot in a city with plenty of hotel options. I think it’s the combination of that central location, the tech-forward approach that actually enhances rather than complicates your stay, and the fact that they’ve created a space that feels both efficient and welcoming. You know what really sealed it for me? The 24-hour grab-and-go market in the lobby — perfect for those late-night snack runs or early morning coffee before heading out to explore Rotterdam’s incredible architecture and food scene.

  This is my favourite Rotterdam hotel. Ilove the lounge and the pod room with all iPod controls. Complete blackout blind, super comfy bed and no noise! Friendly and accommodating staff with a really good breakfast buffet and barista coffee. They also make very nice cocktails if you want to relax and look out over the old harbour in the living room. The hotel is very central to Markthal, cube houses, shops and museums. Also flexible parking at Markthal is a bonus if not using public transport. A 1 minute walk to Blaak metro and train. Perfect.
