I’ll be honest, when I first spotted citizenM Rotterdam near the city center, I wasn’t sure what to expect from this four-star place – the exterior has this sort of industrial-meets-sleek vibe that could go either way. But stepping inside, you immediately get hit with this energy that’s hard to describe… it’s like someone took a boutique hotel and mixed it with the coolest co-working space you’ve ever seen. The lobby buzzes with this international crowd – business travelers tapping away on laptops next to backpackers planning their next move through Rotterdam, and somehow it all just works.

What really got me was how they’ve thought through the small stuff that actually matters when you’re traveling. The rooms are compact, sure, but everything has its place in this almost zen-like way – and that bed, I mean, I’ve stayed in much pricier places with beds that weren’t half as comfortable. The tech setup is pretty slick too; you control everything from lighting to temperature through this tablet system that doesn’t make you want to throw it against the wall (which honestly is rare). The views vary depending on which floor you snag, but even the lower floors give you these interesting glimpses of Rotterdam’s mix of old and rebuilt architecture.

You know what surprised me most? The communal areas never felt overcrowded, even during what seemed like peak times. There’s this rooftop bar situation that locals actually hang out at – not just hotel guests – which tells you something about a place. The breakfast setup runs more expensive than I’d like, but the coffee situation throughout the day is solid, and there are enough decent eating spots within a few blocks that you won’t go hungry. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle if you’re driving, but honestly, Rotterdam’s public transport makes having a car more hassle than it’s worth anyway.

I keep coming back to how this place just feels different from your typical chain hotel experience. Maybe it’s the design details that don’t scream “hotel room,” or the staff who seem genuinely interested in helping rather than just checking boxes, but something about citizenM clicks in a way that makes those few extra euros feel worth it. If you’re the type who appreciates when someone’s actually thought about how people move through and use a space, rather than just filling it with generic furniture, you’ll probably dig this place as much as I did.

  This is my favourite Rotterdam hotel. Ilove the lounge and the pod room with all iPod controls. Complete blackout blind, super comfy bed and no noise! Friendly and accommodating staff with a really good breakfast buffet and barista coffee. They also make very nice cocktails if you want to relax and look out over the old harbour in the living room. The hotel is very central to Markthal, cube houses, shops and museums. Also flexible parking at Markthal is a bonus if not using public transport. A 1 minute walk to Blaak metro and train. Perfect.
