Hotel New York
About
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel New York feels like stepping into a piece of maritime history — and honestly, that's exactly what you're doing. This four-star property sits in a stunning Art Nouveau building that used to be the headquarters of the Holland America Line, where thousands of emigrants once boarded ships bound for America. The towering green copper spires and ornate facade still dominate the Koninginnenhoofd, and you can't help but feel the weight of all those stories as you approach the entrance.
Location & Neighborhood
The location in Rotterdam is absolutely unbeatable — I mean, you're literally on the waterfront with the Nieuwe Maas river right at your doorstep. What's brilliant about this spot is that you're close enough to walk to the city center (maybe 15 minutes across the Erasmus Bridge), but you're tucked away in the Feijenoord district where things feel more relaxed. The Hotel New York water taxi stops right outside, which is actually a fun way to get around the city, and there's decent parking available if you're driving — though honestly, you won't need a car much from here.
The Room Experience
The rooms here are something special, and I get why couples rate this place so highly for romantic getaways. Each room has its own character — some overlook the river, others face the city skyline — but they all maintain that classic maritime elegance without feeling stuffy. The beds are genuinely comfortable (you know how hotel marketing can exaggerate, but this time they're not kidding), and the bathrooms blend modern fixtures with period details really well. What I particularly love is how the tall windows let in so much natural light during the day.
Dining & Breakfast
The breakfast setup is pretty impressive — they do a proper buffet with continental options plus vegetarian choices that actually taste good, not like afterthoughts. The main restaurant has this grand, almost cathedral-like dining room with soaring ceilings and massive windows overlooking the water. It gets busy during dinner service (especially on weekends), so booking ahead makes sense. The food leans toward modern European with some Dutch influences, and while it's not cheap, the setting makes it feel worth it.
Why Guests Love It
There's something about this place that keeps people coming back — the staff mentioned they have more repeat guests than most hotels, and I can see why. It's that rare combination of genuine historical character and modern comfort, plus a location that feels both central and special. You're not just staying in another generic hotel; you're sleeping in a piece of Rotterdam's story. The fact that couples consistently rave about it tells you something too — there's a romantic quality here that's hard to find elsewhere in the city, especially with those river views and the dramatic architecture.

Location is excellent. The rooms are a great size, bathrooms are a good size. Cleanliness, House Keeping exceptional. The restaurant, was fantastic, Food selection was good, but the food at the Basement (bar below,) was par excellent. Service and staff were very friendly, always there to help. A brilliant property, with amazing staff and also an amazing and old building looked after very well.
The room was lovely. Thank you for the upgrade.
My grandfather disembarked from this Hotel (then the HQ and emigrant passenger processing center for the Holland America Line) in 1904. This stay was a special homage to him and to the same named ship I was sailing on, the Rotterdam.
Location was great, within walking distance of cruise port. Water Taxi stop directly behind hotel provides easy access to city center and other attractions. Quirky old historical building, but the rooms are furnished with modern comfortable amenities. On-site restaurant served great food at reasonable prices, very popular with the locals. Consider booking at a rate that includes breakfast, fantastic offering.
It has real character
The river view rooms were large and great. Breakfast was also very good.
Quirky and historical decor.
Our room was huge...and spotless. Possibly the cleanness hotel room we've ever stayed in. The king sized bed was unexpected and very comfortable. The bath had both a modern tub and large separate shower with a rain head and a normal head that you could hold if needed. The staff was always anxious to assist in any way, and the main restaurant was a pleasure... excellent food and service.
The lamb shank dinner we had was delicious.
This hotel is perfect for people looking for historic character combined with modern facilities. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast was great, well worth the cost. I would recommend a water taxi ride. Ideal location for those picking up a cruise.
