Hotel New York
About
First Impressions
Walking up to Hotel New York feels like stepping into a piece of Rotterdam's maritime history — and honestly, that's exactly what you're doing. This striking building used to be the headquarters of the Holland America Line, where thousands of passengers once boarded ships bound for New York (hence the name). The architecture alone is worth the visit, with its imposing brick facade and art deco details that somehow manage to feel both grand and welcoming. You can actually sense the weight of history here, but it never feels stuffy or museum-like.
Location & Neighborhood
The location on Koninginnenhoofd is absolutely brilliant — I mean, you're literally on the waterfront with the Maas River right at your doorstep. What's really clever about this spot is that you get stunning views of Rotterdam's famous skyline across the water, but you're tucked away from the city center's hustle and bustle. The Wilhelminapier district has this cool, modern vibe with plenty of restaurants and cafes within walking distance. Getting into the city center is easy too — there's a water taxi that's actually fun to take, or you can walk across the Erasmus Bridge in about fifteen minutes.
The Rooms
The four-star rooms here strike that perfect balance between historic charm and modern comfort. Many of them have these gorgeous high ceilings and original architectural details that remind you of the building's past, but the furnishings are contemporary and well-thought-out. The beds are genuinely excellent — I'm talking about the kind of sleep quality that makes you want to check what brand of mattress they're using. River-view rooms are obviously the prize here, and if you're traveling as a couple, it's worth the splurge because those sunset views over the water are pretty spectacular.
Breakfast & Dining
Breakfast at Hotel New York is served in what used to be the original departure hall, which gives the whole experience this wonderful sense of occasion. The buffet setup offers a solid mix of continental options plus some local Dutch specialties, and they do a good job accommodating vegetarian preferences. The quality is consistently high — fresh pastries, good coffee, and they actually pay attention to details like having proper butter (not those little packets). You know what I particularly appreciated? The staff seems to remember your coffee preferences after a day or two, which is a nice touch that makes repeat visits feel even more comfortable.
Why Guests Love It
There's something about this place that keeps people coming back — the repeat guest rate here is notably higher than most hotels, and I get why. It's that rare combination of a unique setting, solid comfort, and genuine character that you just don't find everywhere. Couples especially seem to fall for the romantic waterfront setting and those incredible city views. The building itself tells such an interesting story, and staying here feels like you're part of Rotterdam's narrative rather than just passing through. Plus, the staff genuinely seems to care about your experience, which makes all the difference when you're trying to unwind and enjoy your time in this fascinating city.

Location is excellent. The rooms are a great size, bathrooms are a good size. Cleanliness, House Keeping exceptional. The restaurant, was fantastic, Food selection was good, but the food at the Basement (bar below,) was par excellent. Service and staff were very friendly, always there to help. A brilliant property, with amazing staff and also an amazing and old building looked after very well.
The room was lovely. Thank you for the upgrade.
My grandfather disembarked from this Hotel (then the HQ and emigrant passenger processing center for the Holland America Line) in 1904. This stay was a special homage to him and to the same named ship I was sailing on, the Rotterdam.
Location was great, within walking distance of cruise port. Water Taxi stop directly behind hotel provides easy access to city center and other attractions. Quirky old historical building, but the rooms are furnished with modern comfortable amenities. On-site restaurant served great food at reasonable prices, very popular with the locals. Consider booking at a rate that includes breakfast, fantastic offering.
It has real character
The river view rooms were large and great. Breakfast was also very good.
Quirky and historical decor.
Our room was huge...and spotless. Possibly the cleanness hotel room we've ever stayed in. The king sized bed was unexpected and very comfortable. The bath had both a modern tub and large separate shower with a rain head and a normal head that you could hold if needed. The staff was always anxious to assist in any way, and the main restaurant was a pleasure... excellent food and service.
The lamb shank dinner we had was delicious.
This hotel is perfect for people looking for historic character combined with modern facilities. The staff were very friendly. Breakfast was great, well worth the cost. I would recommend a water taxi ride. Ideal location for those picking up a cruise.
