Sudermar Overview
You know what? Sudermar is one of those places that completely catches you off guard in the best possible way. I stumbled across this unique boutique hotel tucked away on Wijnhaven, and honestly, I’m still thinking about it months later. The building itself has this incredible industrial-meets-cozy vibe – think exposed brick and steel beams, but with these unexpectedly plush touches that make you want to sink into every corner and just stay put.
The location is actually genius, even though it might not seem obvious at first glance. You’re right in the heart of Rotterdam‘s Centrum district, which means you can walk to pretty much everything that matters – the Markthal is maybe ten minutes away, and you’re literally steps from some of the city’s best hole-in-the-wall spots that most tourists never find. I mean, there’s this tiny coffee place around the corner that locals line up for every morning, and the hotel staff actually pointed me toward it instead of trying to sell me their own overpriced lobby coffee. That kind of authenticity is rare these days.
What really sets Sudermar apart is how it feels more like staying at a friend’s impossibly cool apartment than a typical hotel. The rooms have this lived-in elegance – not sterile or overly designed, but thoughtfully curated with local art and furniture that actually tells a story. My room had these massive windows that flooded everything with natural light during the day, and at night, the street below had just enough activity to feel alive without being disruptive. The beds are seriously comfortable too, which honestly matters more than any fancy amenities when you’re exploring Rotterdam on foot all day. The staff strikes this perfect balance between being helpful and giving you space – they know the neighborhood inside and out, but they’re not hovering or trying to upsell you on tours every five minutes. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and they actually listened when I mentioned I was hoping for restaurant recommendations that weren’t just the usual tourist traps. Rotterdam can feel a bit overwhelming with all its modern architecture and constant construction, but Sudermar somehow manages to be this calm, grounding presence in the middle of it all. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re experiencing the real city rather than just passing through it.
Rotterdam hotels provide guests with comfortable accommodations in this forward-thinking city, known for its innovative architecture, world-class museums, and legendary maritime districts.

What could be improved: maybe just the bridge to the boatQuirky base for exploring the wonderful city of Rotterdam – Tim from United Kingdom – December 20, 2022 (9/10)
I was very late arriving (due to easyJet…) but my wonderful host just waited up without any bother at all. The boat is in a great location, and being almost 120 years old… it had a real history to it. Breakfast was a crummy
Wonderful experience on a Sailboat – Braden from United States – October 31, 2022 (8/10)
The experience of staying on a sailboat is unique, and the caretakers are welcoming and genuine. These make for a great experience. Everything is managed well and functioning. The common area is a great place to use computer or read.
What could be improved: The things that come with being on a boat: humidity is high and space is limited. Prepare for these and everything will be fine.Real sailing barge in the heart of Rotterdam. – Robert from United Kingdom – October 30, 2022 (9/10)
Makes a pleasant change from anonymous hotel rooms. A real sailing barge, full of character and fine detail. Everything clean and ship-shape, comfortable bunks, adequate bathroom arrangements. Excellent location on a cafe-filled quay-side very close to Rotterdam Blaak train station and the maritime museum.
What could be improved: Nothing. You can hear clearly sounds in the adjacent cabins but that is a minor annoyance.A great boat to stay on, good value and friendly owners. – Ashley from United Kingdom – March 29, 2025 (7/10)
Breakfast good, rooms good, location great. Not for those who have trouble with stairs!
What could be improved: Showers are small and difficult to use, but what do you expect, its a barge.Very friendly owner. Old sailor. – Luis from Germany – November 23, 2024 (8/10)

love spending time on a boat. owner was really relaxed. nice guy. internet worked well for my video call at work.
What could be improved: beds are very small. I’m 1.80m and that’s about the maximum height that can fit in the beds.
