I stumbled across this unique boutique hotel tucked away on Wijnhaven, and honestly, I’m still thinking about it months later. The building itself has this incredible industrial-meets-cozy vibe – think exposed brick and steel beams, but with these unexpectedly plush touches that make you want to sink into every corner and just stay put.

The location is actually genius, even though it might not seem obvious at first glance. You’re right in the heart of Rotterdam‘s Centrum district, which means you can walk to pretty much everything that matters – the Markthal is maybe ten minutes away, and you’re literally steps from some of the city’s best hole-in-the-wall spots that most tourists never find. I mean, there’s this tiny coffee place around the corner that locals line up for every morning, and the hotel staff actually pointed me toward it instead of trying to sell me their own overpriced lobby coffee. That kind of authenticity is rare these days.

What really sets Sudermar apart is how it feels more like staying at a friend’s impossibly cool apartment than a typical hotel. The rooms have this lived-in elegance – not sterile or overly designed, but thoughtfully curated with local art and furniture that actually tells a story. My room had these massive windows that flooded everything with natural light during the day, and at night, the street below had just enough activity to feel alive without being disruptive. The beds are seriously comfortable too, which honestly matters more than any fancy amenities when you’re exploring Rotterdam on foot all day. The staff strikes this perfect balance between being helpful and giving you space – they know the neighborhood inside and out, but they’re not hovering or trying to upsell you on tours every five minutes. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and they actually listened when I mentioned I was hoping for restaurant recommendations that weren’t just the usual tourist traps. Rotterdam can feel a bit overwhelming with all its modern architecture and constant construction, but Sudermar somehow manages to be this calm, grounding presence in the middle of it all. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re experiencing the real city rather than just passing through it.

  The experience of staying on a sailboat is unique, and the caretakers are welcoming and genuine. These make for a great experience. Everything is managed well and functioning. The common area is a great place to use computer or read.

  Makes a pleasant change from anonymous hotel rooms. A real sailing barge, full of character and fine detail. Everything clean and ship-shape, comfortable bunks, adequate bathroom arrangements. Excellent location on a cafe-filled quay-side very close to Rotterdam Blaak train station and the maritime museum.
  
  What could be improved: Nothing. You can hear clearly sounds in the adjacent cabins but that is a minor annoyance.

  love spending time on a boat. owner was really relaxed. nice guy. internet worked well for my video call at work.
