Middelland Hotel, Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy Overview
You know what caught me off guard about Middelland Hotel, Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy? It’s tucked away on Mathenesserlaan in this wonderfully gritty part of Rotterdam called Delfshaven, and honestly, the contrast is what makes it work so well. I mean, here’s this sleek boutique hotel sitting in a neighborhood that still feels authentically Dutch – not the polished, tourist-friendly version you get in the city center, but the real deal with corner cafés and locals walking their dogs.
The building itself has this industrial-chic thing going on that actually fits the area perfectly. Rotterdam’s known for its bold architecture, and this place doesn’t try to compete with those flashy downtown towers – instead, it sort of nestles into the neighborhood while still feeling distinctly modern. When I checked in, the lobby had this relaxed vibe that reminded me more of a well-designed apartment building than a traditional hotel, which makes sense since Sonder basically pioneered that whole “aparthotel” concept. The staff was refreshingly straightforward too – no over-the-top hospitality theater, just helpful people who knew their stuff about getting around the city.
What I really appreciated was how they’ve designed the rooms to feel like actual living spaces rather than generic hotel boxes. The kitchenette isn’t just for show either – there’s a decent grocery store about a five-minute walk away, and honestly, picking up some local cheese and bread for breakfast felt more authentic than dealing with an overpriced hotel restaurant. The neighborhood comes alive in the mornings with commuters heading to the tram stop, and you get this genuine slice of Rotterdam life that you’d miss if you stayed in the touristy areas. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle on the street, but the hotel staff pointed me toward a couple of reliable spots nearby – just don’t expect American-style convenience. The tram connections are actually fantastic though; you can get to the Markthal or the iconic cube houses in about fifteen minutes, but when you come back in the evening, you’re returning to this quieter, more residential pocket of the city. I slept better here than I did at the fancier place I stayed at in Amsterdam the week before – maybe it was the slightly thicker walls, or just the fact that Delfshaven doesn’t have drunk tourists stumbling around at 2 AM.
To book a hotel in Rotterdam during major events like Architecture Month, travelers need early planning as this dynamic city draws visitors eager to experience its cutting-edge skyline and world-famous urban innovations.

Reviews of Middelland Hotel, Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy
Very nice – Sara from Belgium – September 17, 2025 (9/10)
Nice room, free koffie, clean, nice shower products (shampoo etc).
What could be improved: The location is quite far from the city centre. One or two restaurants within walking distance.
Shower was leaking in both rooms, so when you shower the whole bathroom fills with water.Comfortable, clean, friendly, relaxing – Ruslan from Australia – September 16, 2025 (9/10)
Very clean, very comfortable bed, good climate system, quiet, friendly concierge, late check-in, very good shower
What could be improved: The room is a bit small but its a good value for money, everything else outweigh the sizeExcellent modern room and great value for money – Zsisku from United Kingdom – September 16, 2025 (9/10)
Clean tidy and everything you’d want was provided including bathroom sundries and tea/ coffee set. Room was just as pictured and very comfortable. Lovely quiet neighbourhood easy to get to from the train station.
Handy location for public transport. – William from United Kingdom – September 13, 2025 (9/10)
Had everything you would need. Staff were very pleasant and helpful.
Exceptional – Nuno from Portugal – September 9, 2025 (10/10)
My first thinking was "very small room", but quickly I ignored it because it's very clean, functional and comfortable.
The location is very quiet and at the same time near the night life of the city.
Close to transportation (bus to airport of Rotterdam/The Hague) and places to take breakfast.
Friendly staff and easy checkin/checkout.
I highly recommend it and I will be back!Exceptional – Kristaps from Netherlands – August 29, 2025 (10/10)
I enjoyed staying at this hotel. The room was small but clean, and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was also clean.
Exceptional – Chin from Australia – August 24, 2025 (10/10)
What could be improved: Water will come out from the shower room since the glass door didn't completely seal
A fab stay – Rob from United Kingdom – August 23, 2025 (9/10)
Amazing beds, so well presented & very welcoming staff, and we loved the signature scent.
What could be improved: The door key pads are very had to see, especially when up against an ‘alcove’. A small stool under the wall desk would have been very useful.Simple and lovely. – Jason from United States – August 21, 2025 (9/10)
The location was excellent, with a 5 minute walk to the tram and 10 minute walk to the metro. The staff was consistently warm and friendly, with lots of suggestions for things to do and see. The coffee machine and filtered water machine were also both brilliant – mornings and evenings were both made better by their presence. The simplicity was also great – check in came via a code, and checking out was as simple as saying bye and thanks. I will definitely be coming back to this location.
What could be improved: I would have loved it were there gym facilities or even space in my room to exercise, but I also knew that going in that I’d need to find other facilities if I wanted to exercise (fortunately Rotterdam is a great city for walking, running, and cycling). It would also have been great if there were small washcloths, but their lack was consistent with my experiences in hotels elsewhere in Rotterdam.Very Good – Jennifer from Germany – August 18, 2025 (8/10)
Clean and modern. Accommodating staff. Decent location.
What could be improved: Rooms are simply too cramped, bad lighting in bathroom. The verification process was a major pain, I kept getting emails asking me to verify myself, yet I had done it. Disorganized computer system where things didn’t register properly. Breakfast was too expensive for what you got.
