I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Maurits Apartments & Suites on Mauritsweg, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It’s this boutique property that doesn’t fit into the usual hotel categories (no official star rating, which actually works in its favor), and from the street it looks almost understated. But you know what? That’s exactly what makes it brilliant.

The location alone sold me on this place. You’re right in Centrum, which means you can walk to pretty much everything that matters in Rotterdam – the Markthal is maybe ten minutes on foot, and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is close enough that you’ll probably wander over there without planning to. What I really appreciated was how quiet Mauritsweg itself is, considering you’re so central. I mean, you get the occasional tram rumbling by, but it’s not like staying on one of the main shopping streets where there’s constant foot traffic until late. The neighborhood has this lived-in feel – actual residents going about their business, small cafés that aren’t tourist traps, that sort of thing.

Inside, the apartments are thoughtfully designed without being precious about it. I stayed in one of the suites and honestly, the kitchen setup was better than what I have at home – proper appliances, enough counter space to actually cook if you want to, decent-sized fridge. The living areas feel spacious but not empty, if that makes sense. They’ve got this modern Dutch aesthetic going on, clean lines and good natural light, but it doesn’t feel sterile. Actually, the whole place has character – you can tell someone put real thought into the details rather than just ordering everything from a hotel supply catalog. The beds are properly comfortable (I’m picky about mattresses), and the bathrooms are well-designed with good water pressure, which you don’t always get in older European buildings.

What really sets this place apart is how it operates. The staff actually know the area and can give you recommendations that go beyond the obvious tourist spots. They pointed me toward this excellent Indonesian place around the corner that I never would’ve found otherwise. Check-in was smooth, no drama with the key cards, and when I had a question about extending my stay, they sorted it out without making it feel like I was asking for a huge favor. It’s that kind of place where they’re professional but not formal – more like staying with friends who happen to run a really well-organized guesthouse.

The 9.8 rating honestly doesn’t surprise me at all. This isn’t trying to be a flashy five-star hotel with a marble lobby and doormen in uniforms, but for what it is – a sophisticated, comfortable base in the heart of Rotterdam – it absolutely delivers. If you’re the type of traveler who wants space to spread out, appreciates good design, and likes being able to walk everywhere without feeling like you’re in the middle of a tourist circus, you’ll get why people love this place. I’m already thinking about booking again for my next Rotterdam trip.

  It was right in the center. It was very close to the convention center we were going to and the tourist attractions. There's a beautiful park across from the building. The person who greeted us at Maurits Suits was also wonderful. He was very helpful. He also left snacks in the room, which was very kind of him.
