Hotel Van Walsum Overview
You know what struck me first about Hotel Van Walsum? It’s this perfectly unassuming building on Mathenesserlaan that somehow manages to feel both historic and completely livable at the same time. I mean, when you’re walking through Rotterdam – a city that’s basically rebuilt itself into this ultra-modern architectural playground – finding a place with actual character instead of just glass and steel feels like discovering a secret.
The thing about this three-star spot is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not, which honestly made my stay so much more relaxed than I expected. The rooms have this cozy, almost residential feel – thick curtains that actually block out the morning light (trust me, you’ll appreciate this if you’re dealing with jet lag), and beds that are firm enough that you won’t wake up with a backache. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions, and they knew the neighborhood well enough to point me toward the good coffee places within walking distance rather than just handing over a generic tourist map.
What really won me over, though, was the location itself. You’re right in Centrum, but on a quieter stretch where you can actually hear yourself think – the trams run nearby but it’s not that constant city rumble that keeps you up all night. I’d walk out in the morning and hit the Witte de Withstraat area for breakfast, or wander over toward the Oude Haven when I wanted to feel more touristy. The Maritime Museum is practically around the corner if you’re into that sort of thing, and honestly, even if you’re not, the walk there takes you through some of Rotterdam’s most interesting streets where old and new Rotterdam kind of bump up against each other. There’s decent parking nearby too – not always easy to find in this part of the city, so that was a pleasant surprise. I actually ended up extending my stay by a night because, well, sometimes you just find a place that works, you know? It’s not flashy, it won’t blow your mind with luxury amenities, but it gets all the important stuff right and lets you focus on actually exploring the city instead of dealing with hotel drama.

Coziness exemplified – Konstantin from United Arab Emirates – September 22, 2025 (10/10)
I got the top floor room and it was super cozy
What could be improved: Bathroom is a little old and has a trace of smell, but nothing criticalGreat central location. Nice room with coffee machine – Gergana from United Kingdom – September 21, 2025 (9/10)
Location is great. Room – spacious. I got Karlsson’s room on the roof – very happy with it. Well worth the money. Clean and safe. Rooms have a coffee machine and a kettle with selection of teas and Illy coffee – perfect start of the day. All the staff is very friendly and very helpful.
What could be improved: Due to scaffold currently outside and the strong winds during my stay – it was very noisy at night – creaking all night but not hotel’s fault.Wonderful – Andrei from Romania – September 18, 2025 (9/10)
A good, clean hotel in a great location with friendly and nice staff, especially the Romanian girl! I didn’t eat there, so I can’t comment on that, but overall, it was a good experience. The location was perfect, with a smallish, cozy room and a nice balcony facing a beautiful garden. There are some restaurants and supermarkets nearby.
I had such a fantastic stay. Everything was extremely neat and organized. Amazing. breakfast as well – Quintero from Colombia – September 17, 2025 (10/10)
I got a very spacious and equipped apartment. Everything was very neat and organized. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The breakfast buffet was amazing, they had so many different options for (eggs, juices, coffees, charcuterie, cheeses, jams, bakery, etc). I really enjoyed having variety every day, plus the hall is cozy and perfect to start the day. I even stayed there to finish some work. They also have sitting outdoors. It was such an amazing stay.

Perfect location to the city centre and the Train Station.
The staff are so friendly and helpful.
Jos who received us at reception was extremely friendly and welcoming.
He provided us with a map and all the places to see in the city, including the way to catch the water bus to Kinderdijk to see the windmills. Highly recommend this hotel to visitors to Rotterdam.

People are so kind and caring. Breakfast is incredible, rooms are far better than a 3 Stars Hotel and you are close to many touristic places. I would love to go back
