Hotel 171 sits right on Nieuwe Binnenweg, and honestly, when I first walked up to it, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this three-star spot. The building has this sort of modern, boxy look that’s pretty typical for Rotterdam – you know how the city rebuilt itself after the war with all that contemporary architecture. But here’s the thing: sometimes the most unassuming places surprise you the most.

The location is actually brilliant if you want to feel like you’re living in a real Rotterdam neighborhood rather than some touristy bubble. Nieuwe Binnenweg is this long street that locals use constantly – there’s a decent Albert Heijn supermarket just a few minutes’ walk away, and you’ll find yourself sharing the sidewalks with people heading to work or walking their dogs, not just other tourists with cameras. I mean, you’re still close enough to walk to the Markthal or the cube houses, but you get this authentic slice of daily life that’s pretty refreshing. The tram connections from here are solid too – I never waited more than ten minutes to get anywhere in the city center.

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to actually care about getting things right. Check-in was smooth, and when I mentioned I was hoping for a quieter room (old habit from too many nights near busy streets), they moved me to the back without any fuss. The rooms themselves are clean and functional – nothing fancy, but the beds are comfortable and the shower pressure is surprisingly good. You know what I appreciated? The windows actually open properly, which seems like such a small thing until you’re in a stuffy hotel room. The Wi-Fi worked fine throughout my stay, and there’s decent natural light if you’re the type who likes to work from your room. Sure, it’s not going to wow you with marble bathrooms or panoramic city views, but sometimes you just want a place that does the basics really well without charging you extra for unnecessary frills. The neighborhood gets pretty quiet at night too, which was perfect after long days of walking around the city.

  I visit this place a lot due to its convenient location to the Erasmus hospital and city center. The rooms are very clean always.

  It was very close to the hospital where I worked. It was clean and comfortable, for the most part.
  
  What could be improved: The excessive street noise at night, poorly sound-proofed windows. The room did not have a wardrobe, so all my clothes had to stay on a small cupboard and a hang rail (with plenty of hangers however). The collaboration with the restaurant for the breakfast was a neat idea, however I started work at 08:00 mostly every day, meaning I had to skip on breakfast more often than not (the restaurant also opened at 8).

  Good location to get Delfshaven and the centre. The breakfast provided by the nearby cafe was very tasty and good quality. The room was large enough. Kettle provided with the room but you need to collect tea and coffee from the ‘living room’
